Birthday getaways are the best kind of getaways. Especially when they include the beach, six of your best friends and more than six bottles of wine.
Last weekend, my friends and I went down to Avoca Beach for two nights. Thanks to the ingenious accommodation website, Airbnb, we stayed in a gorgeous, modern house with the best bed I've ever slept in. We spent the weekend walking along the beach, watching movies and of course, eating.
The main beach in Avoca is absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. It was too cold to swim while we were down there, but the sunshine kept the worst of the chill away as we took photos, experimented with footprints and wondered how high school suddenly seemed so far away (we're all five years out now).
Like many young adults (or just people in general), most of us can't survive a day without caffeine. So we were thrilled to find the ever-enticing green Campos sign outside a cafe called Wise Food. This immediately became our go-to cafe for the entire weekend, not just because of the great coffee, but for their wholesome meals, organic snacks, superfood bars and homemade condiments.
While we were in predominantly to relax and reconnect, we also did a tad of exploring. Here are a few things that I would recommend doing if you ever get the pleasure of visiting Avoca Beach:
- Go to the beach (duh)
- Watch a movie Avoca Picture Theatre
- Check out Copacabana (if only for the name)
- Bag some groceries from Kincumber
- Have dinner at Mojito Joes, a kitschy Hawaiian restaurant with highly addictive chilli-lime fries
Like all holidays, big or small, the weekend flew by and before we knew it, we were driving home to hug our mums on Mother's Day. But I brought some of Avoca Beach back with me, in a jar of homemade vinaigrette, the sand in my car and of course, photos, which probably do a nicer job of capturing our getaway than my words ever will.
The whole crew
