Game of Thrones Season 4 Premiere

Winter is coming and we got tickets to the preview! Thanks to Triple M, my sister won two tickets to the State Theatre's screening of the first episode of the highly anticipated season 4.

We got dressed up (the dress code said Westeros, but we left our gowns at home) and stood in line with our fellow competition winners. There was a warm feeling of camaraderie in the air, we were all fans of the show, thus we could become instant friends.

My sister and I being Cersei and Joffrey - the resemblance is uncanny.

Turns out, Jamie Lannister was the special guest! Or as he is otherwise known by his real (and more complicated name), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He seemed like such an easy-going guy, with none of the threatening Lannister qualities of his on-screen character. He was very funny though and completely comfortable interacting with the audience. Some audience members had dressed up, and Nikolaj asked them all to join him on stage for an Ellen-style selfie.

The Kingslayer steps onto the stage.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a really funny guy.

A selfie to rival Ellen's.

When Nikolaj stepped off the stage, we were all prepared for the screening to start when suddenly smoke began billowing out from the stage. Eerie music began as a white walker stepped onto the stage. He was brilliant. Almost exactly like the one in the show, glowing blue eyes and all. Their performance was short, but actually became pretty scary when the white walkers started appearing from the audience and creeping down the aisles. I'm not ashamed to say that I may have shrieked a little.

By the time the performance had finished, the anticipation for the episode was thick in the air. Then when it started, most of us couldn't contain our enthusiasm. The episode itself was a solid introduction to the season. It didn't cover every character's story, and it was good that it didn't try to.

Upsetting moments: Cersei's harsh, but sort of understandable reaction to Jamie's long-awaited return. Apparently being captured and having a limb severed isn't a good enough excuse for being late.

Worrying moments: As much as I loved seeing Arya getting sweet revenge, all this killing can only lead to more killing. Of course, if the men can handle it, why can't she? But does she really want to be one of them? Hopefully she can find her own way of coping with the bloodshed.

All in all, we felt extremely privileged to watch Game of Thrones on the big screen, surrounded by the show's biggest Australian fans. Here's to winning more competitions that bring us that one step closer to Westeros!
